Technical scope
Drawings, structural requirements, material choices and critical junctions are reviewed as one connected carpentry package.
Project enquiry
A hands-on approach to structural carpentry, developed from the building itself and carried into projects nationwide.
Our beginnings
James Shield Carpentry began with a simple belief: the best work begins with care in the detail. From Hayling Island, James developed a hands-on approach to structural carpentry that remains central to every project—wherever in the UK the work takes place.

The approach
JSC is shaped around work that benefits from direct attention: complex timber geometry, demanding alterations and connected carpentry packages where small decisions affect the wider build.
The aim is not to make a broad claim about every discipline. It is to understand the defined package, work from the right information and bring practical carpentry judgement to the parts that matter.
Specialist delivery
JSC works at the point where structure, programme and finish meet.

Each package is planned around drawings, access, sequence, materials and the interfaces with other trades.
JSC can work alongside architects, structural engineers and principal contractors where required.

Drawings, structural requirements, material choices and critical junctions are reviewed as one connected carpentry package.
Access, sequence and interfaces with other trades are considered early, so the agreed work can sit clearly within the wider programme.
The package is carried from setting out through installation with direct attention to structure, accuracy and finish.
Working principles
Define scope, interfaces and responsibilities before they become site problems.
Set out carefully and carry the design through structure, junction and finish.
Keep a hands-on understanding of the package from early review through delivery.
How we work
Plans, photographs, location, programme and the intended package are reviewed together.
Scope, interfaces, responsibilities and practical site requirements are clarified.
Drawings, sequencing, access and materials are resolved before the work starts.
The agreed carpentry package is carried through with close attention to structure, detail and finish.
